The Honorary Governor of Chungbuk Province program appoints prominent figures who have contributed to the region’s development and encourages their participation in a variety of provincial support activities such as policy proposals and consultation. Chairwoman Hyun was first appointed in 2020 and has since served consecutive terms through reappointments.
This latest appointment is expected to serve as a catalyst to further expand the cooperative relationship for regional development between Hyundai Group and the 9th popularly elected Chungbuk government, which was inaugurated in July this year, and to deepen the scope of mutual growth.
The relationship between Chairwoman Hyun and Chungbuk Province began in 2019 when Hyundai Elevator, the group’s core affiliate, decided to relocate its headquarters and production facilities to Chungju.
Hyundai Elevator’s Chungju Smart Campus, opened in 2022, is a key production hub built on a 172,759-square-meter site and features the headquarters, R&D center, and smart factory. Last year, the 250-meter-tall Hyundai Asan Tower (a super high-rise elevator test tower) was completed on campus, establishing a business infrastructure centered in Chungju for everything from production to research and development.
The company’s efforts in mutual growth with the local community have expanded to diverse areas such as talent development and employment. Hyundai Elevator continues regionally targeted social contribution activities including employment for people with disabilities and support for scholarships and underprivileged groups, exemplified by the establishment of the “Orrak” choir for people with disabilities. The company also operates an industry-academia linked training program with Chungju Technical High School to nurture local talent.
Last year, it also expanded its community engagement by donating profits from its in-house cafe for employees with disabilities, “Ellis,” to the Chungbuk Welfare Center for the Disabled, further promoting initiatives for the self-reliance of people with disabilities within the region.
Chairwoman Hyun stated, “I am deeply grateful that the relationship between Chungbuk and Hyundai Group continues as a partnership for shared growth with the local community. Based on this collaborative spirit, I will do my utmost to support Chungbuk as it takes great strides toward the future.”

Governor Shin also remarked, “Chairwoman Hyun's philosophy—‘Act preemptively and boldly take on challenges’—closely aligns with Chungbuk’s guiding spirit of ‘Chungbuk Grand Transformation, Practicality for the People.’ I hope she will serve as a reliable milestone for Chungbuk as it pioneers the future of high-tech industries such as semiconductors, secondary batteries, and biotechnology.”
