Melon 'Soop;treeming' Creates Forests Named After Big Bang, SHINee, and Others
12,851 Trees Planted Across 25 Locations
On October 2, Melon, the music streaming platform operated by Kakao Entertainment, announced that it has established a total of 25 forests and planted 12,851 trees in Seoul through its fan participation forestry project, ‘Soop;treeming’.
Last month, Melon created forests named after Big Bang, AKMU, BLACKPINK, and SHINee at Nanji Hangang Park in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The No.1 Forests for Big Bang and AKMU were completed on the 10th of last month, while the No.1 Forests for BLACKPINK and SHINee were finished on the 18th of the same month. The No.3 Forest for NCT is scheduled to be created on October 16 at Nolbit Square of Seoul Forest, where Jungnangcheon and the Han River meet.
‘Soop;treeming’ is a project that Melon launched in June 2022. When a regular subscriber chooses an artist to support, up to 2% of the monthly subscription payment is accumulated in the name of the selected artist. When the accumulated amount reaches 20 million won, Melon adds 5 million won, and the total of 25 million won is donated to the Seoul Federation for Environmental Movement, which then creates a forest in Seoul bearing the chosen artist’s name.
Including these five new forests, a total of 25 forests have been established over about four years, with cumulative donations reaching 825 million won. Melon estimates that the trees planted in these forests absorb approximately 279 tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is comparable to the amount emitted by 100 passenger cars in one year.
In addition to the newly established forests, Nanji Hangang Park also has artist-named forests for Young Tak, BTS, and Lim Young Woong.
