Continuation of Ruling Bloc Unity Efforts After Party Convention
Separate Meeting Held Following Chung's Recovery
On October 1, President Lee Jae-myung held a four-hour dinner at the Blue House with former Democratic Party leader Chung Cheong-rae to extensively discuss national affairs and internal party issues. Given the continued ideological divisions within the party since the Democratic Party’s convention in August, President Lee’s separate, long meeting with former leader Chung is seen as a forum for broad discussion on party unity and strategies for cooperation in state governance.
President Lee Jae-myung held a four-hour dinner on the 1st at the Blue House with former Democratic Party leader Chung Cheong-rae, during which they extensively discussed national affairs and party issues.

Chief Spokesperson Kang further explained, "President Lee and former leader Chung engaged in an honest four-hour conversation on a wide range of national and party issues, and built a deep consensus." However, the specific issues on which opinions were exchanged were not disclosed.
This meeting was arranged separately following former leader Chung's recovery from health problems. Former leader Chung had been hospitalized due to deteriorating health, but was discharged on September 23. President Lee is said to have called Chung personally on September 21, just before departing for the UN General Assembly in New York and a state visit to Mexico, to wish him a speedy recovery and to suggest meeting after his discharge.
In political circles, this dinner is being viewed as an extension of President Lee’s recent emphasis on unifying the ruling bloc. At a press conference on September 18, President Lee addressed internal party conflicts, stating that "we are all pro-Moon, pro-Roh, pro-Kim Dae-jung and comrades of Lee Jae-myung," emphasizing caution against divisions within the political camp.
Previously, right after the Democratic Party convention on August 17, President Lee also invited the newly elected leader Kim Min-seok, former leader Chung, and lawmaker Song Young-gil to the Blue House for dinner. On that occasion, President Lee described the three as "comrades who have shared the ups and downs of life and key actors in a government founded on national sovereignty." He urged unity, calling the administration, party, and Blue House "a community of shared fate and partners in governance." Attendees also agreed to work together as a "stronger one team" to ensure the government’s success.
Nevertheless, the internal disagreements over party direction have not been completely resolved even after the convention. At the Democratic Party's workshop in late August, when leader Kim emphasized the need for a more centrist approach, former leader Chung openly criticized him, leading to a public confrontation. At the time, Chung called Kim a 'microphone dictator,' and Kim responded, prolonging the discord that first surfaced at the convention.
Against this backdrop, President Lee’s four-hour one-on-one discussion with former leader Chung is being interpreted as an effort to strengthen ruling bloc solidarity as he pursues key national tasks in the second year of his administration. With the regular session of the National Assembly requiring the government to handle major reform agendas and essential budget and livelihood legislation, President Lee’s meetings with key party figures are seen as a move to secure political momentum for governance.
