Trump: "Possible to Intensify Strikes on Iran After Midterm Elections"
Refusal of Iran's "7-Day Plan"
"Offer Was Not Good Enough"
U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of intensifying airstrikes against Iran after the upcoming midterm elections in November.
According to the U.S. weekly magazine Time on October 1 (local time), President Trump answered "It's possible" when asked whether he would increase the intensity of airstrikes on Iran after the midterm elections. The interview was conducted at the White House on September 28.
He also reaffirmed his previous stance regarding his comment at the United Nations General Assembly last month that Iran could be "annihilated." President Trump said, "Yes. I would do that. It's possible," adding, "As long as Iran exists, I never believe we can enjoy peace."
He dismissed concerns about a potential U.S. ammunition shortage. President Trump stated, "We have plenty of weapons. We have been stockpiling over the past six months," and called the official Department of Defense report on ammunition shortages "mostly fake news."
However, he admitted that the stock levels for certain types of ammunition are lower compared to others. He said, "The stock levels for some ammunition are a bit lower than other types," but claimed that the performance of U.S.-held ammunition is outstanding.
Regarding his recent rejection of Iran's so-called "7-Day Plan" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump explained, "It's because I wouldn't have approved it a year ago, and I wouldn't approve it today either." He continued, "They made an offer to reopen the strait. I may have seen part of the proposal, but probably not all of it," adding, "That offer just wasn't good enough."
Previously, on September 24, Iran publicly announced the "7-Day Plan" involving reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Iran demanded that the United States lift the maritime embargo on Iran, release frozen assets, exempt Iranian crude oil from sanctions, and halt hostile acts on all fronts, including Lebanon.
