People Power Party Holds On-Site Caucus in Front of Serious Crime Investigation Agency: "Gates to Security Breakdown Hell Open Tomorrow"
Jeong Jeomsik: "The Launch of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency Was Rushed... This Is the Reality of Public Security"
The People Power Party visited the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, which is set to launch tomorrow (October 2), and once again criticized the government and the ruling party's moves to overhaul the criminal justice system. The party warned, “The gates of a security collapse hell will open starting tomorrow.”
People Power Party leader Donghyuk Jang, floor leader Jeongsik Jeong, and other members of the People Power Party attended the on-site caucus held in front of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 1st, a day before the abolition of the Prosecutors' Office and the establishment of the Public Prosecution Office and the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency. This protest was held at the site of the newly established agency, ahead of the implementation of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act taking effect tomorrow, to criticize efforts to restructure the criminal justice system and to demand appropriate countermeasures for the anticipated side effects.
Jeong Jeongsik, the party’s floor leader, stated, “At midnight tonight, the Prosecutors' Office will disappear. Prosecutors’ supplementary investigation rights will be abolished.” He added, “The Lee Jae-myung administration has finally created a paradise for criminals.” Jeong continued, “Seeing the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency here, we can tell how haphazardly its launch has proceeded. A national government agency is renting space in a private commercial building, with interior construction still ongoing. The offices are empty, with steel beams and metal pipes lying around. This is the reality of public safety in the Republic of Korea.”
He further expressed concern by saying, “From tomorrow, who will uncover serious crimes like the Jang Yunki case? The gates to a hell where rape is not recognized as rape, and murder is not recognized as murder, are being opened as public safety collapses.” He added, “Women and children who are victims will be even more terrified. We are about to enter an era where perpetrators roam freely and victims have to hide. This is a world created by the Lee Jae-myung administration, which loves criminals and hates prosecutors, and by the Democratic Party, which is more focused on attacking prosecutors than on addressing criminals.”
Jeong also pointed out, “What is more serious is that even the position of the Director of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency is vacant. The Minister of Justice, the Chief Prosecutor of the Public Prosecution Office, and the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency are all vacant as well.” He went on to say, “The President nominated Kim Jiyong as Director of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency but has not submitted the personnel hearing request to the National Assembly for more than three weeks. It seems he has not been able to do so due to internal party opposition.” He demanded, “We urge the President not to mock the opposition and the National Assembly any longer and to withdraw the nomination of Kim Jiyong for Director of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency.”
Park Hyungsoo, the opposition secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, warned, “This overhaul of the criminal justice system will face stern judgment from the people and from history. The Democratic Party and President Lee bear full responsibility for the tears and suffering of the people and crime victims resulting from this criminal justice system reform.” Kang Myeonggu, opposition secretary of the Public Administration and Security Committee, also criticized, saying, “Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Hojoong confidently asserted that preparations for the launch of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency were well underway. But what is the result? The agency's launch has already failed.”

Party leader Jang Donghyuk said, “With the empty Serious Crimes Investigation Agency and the empty Public Prosecution Office, the gates of public safety hell have been opened.” He criticized President Lee, saying, “President Tin Can is making the whole country hollow.” He continued, “The answer is clear: Anyone seeking to withdraw prosecution is a criminal. The only way to save Korea is to resume President Lee’s trial.”
