Former Prosecutor General Shim Woojung Completely Denies Charges of Involvement in Rebellion
Additional Preparatory Hearing Scheduled for October 23
The legal team representing Shim Woojung, former Prosecutor General, who has been put on trial on charges of involvement in the 12·3 Martial Law incident—including consideration of dispatching prosecutors—has completely denied all allegations.
On September 30, at the first preparatory hearing for the case on charges of participation in the main duties during a rebellion and related offenses, held by the 38-3rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Choi Younggak, Jang Sungjin, and Jung Sooyoung), Shim's attorney stated, "We deny all charges." The defense team for Jeon Mugon, former Chief of Planning and Coordination at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, who stands trial alongside Shim, also denied all allegations.
However, both legal teams reserved further comment, stating that they have not yet completed the review of the case files.
The court has decided to hold another preparatory hearing on October 23.
Shim is accused of, starting from the day martial law was declared until the early hours of the next day, considering the dispatch of prosecutors to the Joint Martial Law Investigation Headquarters under instructions from Park Sungjae, former Minister of Justice. He is also alleged to have participated in discussions regarding response measures to crimes transferred to military court jurisdiction immediately after the declaration, as well as in the drafting of a document concerning 'jurisdiction of trials under martial law.'
Additionally, Shim faces charges of abuse of authority for allegedly dropping an immediate appeal after the court accepted the request to lift the detention of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who had been indicted and detained in March last year on charges of being a ringleader in a rebellion, among others.
