Patent Application Filed for Non-Invasive Model
Analyzing 22 Million Big Data Records

Cosmax is strengthening its scalp and hair research by utilizing bio big data and artificial intelligence (AI).

On September 30, Cosmax announced that it had developed an AI-based alopecia areata prediction model and completed the patent application. By training the AI on approximately 22 million national health examination big data records from Korea and Japan, the company has built a model that predicts the risk of alopecia areata without requiring biological samples.

This model comprehensively analyzes 33 variables, including physiological and medical indicators such as blood pressure and liver values, as well as demographic and socioeconomic indicators. Cosmax is piloting this algorithm on its personalized beauty platform 'BYNIQ,' recommending products containing functional ingredients 'SOYACT' or 'GANOXYL' according to the risk of hair loss.

Cosmax is also expanding global scalp research. By analyzing the scalp lipidome of 387 participants of East Asian, European, and African descent, it classified scalp types into three categories and identified both ethnicity-specific lipid structures and common lipid traits related to hair loss. Based on these findings, Cosmax plans to develop ethnicity-specific biomarker panels and personalized products.

Original technology development is also yielding results. In collaboration with Seoul National University, Cosmax has developed a new material called 'Corelink-S' that restores cystine bonds in hair and improves the tensile strength of damaged hair by more than 120%. This ingredient was selected as a finalist in the Haircare Formulation category at this year's Cosmoprof Bologna Cosmopack Awards.

Additionally, Cosmax became the first Korean beauty company to win a main prize at the 2025 International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) by elucidating the mechanism of stress-induced gray hair using human hair follicle organoids.

The research results are being reflected in business performance as well. In the first half of this year, Cosmax's hair care segment sales increased by approximately 65% compared to the same period last year. Over the past three years, Cosmax has filed 37 patents in the hair care field.

The company is also expanding its overseas business. Last year, Cosmax signed a business agreement with global functional ingredient company Scienceco to target the curly hair market, which is worth about 17 trillion won, and is developing a dedicated line that segments hair and scalp conditions into 12 categories. In July, Cosmax established the joint venture 'TRYNEX' with Japanese beauty industry distributor Fujishin, embarking on a personalized hair care business that combines AI-driven prescription technology with a local distribution network.

A Cosmax official stated, "Cosmax is broadening the horizons of hair care research through AI- and big data-based convergent technology and global personalized research. By leveraging our technological edge and empirical data secured through patents and international collaboration, we will lead the paradigm shift toward hyper-personalization in the hair care sector by offering customized solutions tailored to different ethnicities and hair types."
