This project involves building a large-scale AIDC on an 115,702-square-meter site in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, with the first phase of a 60MW modular data center set to break ground at the end of this year. Full-scale operation is slated for the first quarter of 2028. SGC Energy plans to gradually expand the total capacity to 300MW in line with future market demand.

KT Cloud will participate as a design, build, and operate (DBO) partner. The company will undertake data center design consulting, major infrastructure construction (MEP), commissioning for reliability and operational verification, and subsequent hands-on operation. Hyundai Engineering will act as co-contractor, overseeing architecture, civil engineering, facility, landscaping, telecommunications, and some power and cooling systems.

For the first time in Korea, the project will feature an “AI-ready” design, incorporating liquid cooling on every floor. This approach anticipates the high heat and density characteristics of next-generation AI accelerators by pre-designing power and cooling infrastructure and allowing for flexible configurations suited to customer-procured AI systems. It is specifically designed to support NVIDIA’s next-generation AI accelerator, “Vera Rubin.”

The construction will utilize a “modular/skid solution,” in which power and cooling facilities, including liquid cooling units, are prefabricated in modules at the factory and assembled on-site. This prefab method is expected to minimize on-site work, ensure consistent quality, and reduce construction time by over 50%, according to KT Cloud.

Additionally, KT Cloud will apply its commissioning expertise, developed through direct data center construction and operation. From the design and construction stages, it will comprehensively verify the performance and connectivity of power, cooling, and control systems, and systematically manage the quality standards required for large-scale, high-density AIDCs through integrated testing that reflects real-world operating environments.

Taking into account local features and customer demand, KT Cloud plans to provide a total of 1GW of AIDC capacity nationwide by 2031. The company aims to make Gunsan the primary hub for non-metropolitan AIDC business, expanding local capacity to 300MW and continuing its collaboration with SGC Energy through the process.

KT Cloud CEO Kim Bonggyun stated, “Gunsan AIDC is a core project to provide optimal infrastructure at the timing our customers need, in response to the rapidly increasing demand for AI infrastructure. Building on our accumulated expertise, we will ensure the quality and stability of large-scale AIDCs and continue to expand our AIDC supply capacity, including in non-metropolitan areas.”
