North Gyeongsang Province Focuses on Preliminary Feasibility Approval for 84.1 km Muju–Seongju–Daegu Expressway... Policy Seminar Held at National Assembly
Eon-Suk Song, Ho-Young Ahn and Other Lawmakers to Attend
"A Project to Unite Yeongho and Honam Regions"
On September 28 at 2:00 PM, North Gyeongsang Province will hold a National Assembly policy seminar titled “National Assembly Policy Seminar for the Preliminary Feasibility Study Pass for the Muju–Seongju–Daegu Expressway Construction” at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building.
The National Assembly and relevant local governments are jointly responding to ensure that the Muju–Seongju–Daegu (East-West Axis 3) Expressway, a long-awaited project for both Yeongho and Honam regions, passes its preliminary feasibility study.
Lawmakers Eon-Suk Song (People Power Party, Gimcheon), Hee-Yong Chung (People Power Party, Goryeong, Seongju, Chilgok), Ho-Young Ahn (Democratic Party of Korea, Wanju, Jinan, Muju), and Jin-Sook Lee (People Power Party, Dalseong) are scheduled to attend.
At the seminar, lawmakers, local government officials, and transportation experts will discuss the necessity of the project and strategies for addressing the preliminary feasibility study requirements.
The seminar will be chaired by Sunha Lee, a professor at Kongju National University. Sangyeob Kim, Planning & Management Office Chief at Jeonbuk Research Institute, will present on the “Strategy for Promoting the Muju–Daegu Expressway.” Jongtae Park, Director General of Construction & Urban Policy for North Gyeongsang Province, along with experts and directors responsible for roads and transportation from Jeollabuk-do and Daegu, will participate as panelists to widely promote the rationale and policy justification for the project.
The Muju–Seongju–Daegu Expressway connects Muju in Jeollabuk-do to Dalseong in Daegu, passing through Gimcheon, Chilgok, and Seongju in North Gyeongsang Province, covering a total length of 84.1 km. The segment within North Gyeongsang Province is 50 km long, and the total project cost amounts to 6.3997 trillion won. Since the establishment of the National Backbone Road Network in 1992, this section has remained unbuilt for a long period, and this project is a key initiative to connect the disconnected area of the East-West Axis 3 (Saemangeum–Pohang).
North Gyeongsang Province has established a joint response system with Jeonbuk, Daegu, five basic local governments, and Korea Expressway Corporation. As the Korea Development Institute (KDI) began the preliminary feasibility study in January this year, a stakeholders' meeting was held in April to prepare policy-based justification to supplement economic feasibility, as well as demand-creation strategies linking industrial and tourism resources.

Jongtae Park, Director General of Construction & Urban Policy for North Gyeongsang Province, stated, “The Muju–Seongju–Daegu Expressway is a national core project that will complete the East-West Axis 3 and unite Yeongho and Honam into a single transportation and economic zone. Now that the National Assembly and local governments have consolidated their determination to pass the preliminary feasibility study, we will focus all administrative resources on ensuring the construction is launched at the earliest possible date.”
