Optimal Prescription Design by Inputting Target PK
AI Applied to Controlled Release and Combination Drug Formulation Development

Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on September 28 that it has recently been selected as the lead institution for the government-funded project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy titled "Development of an Integrated Optimal Design Platform for AI-Based Controlled Release and Combination Drug Formulations."

The main objective of this project is to develop a platform where, by inputting a target pharmacokinetic (PK) profile, artificial intelligence designs the optimal controlled release or combination drug formulation accordingly. Daewoong Pharmaceutical, along with Kookmin University, Chung-Ang University, and AI JPharm, will participate as joint research institutions.

The research period is three years and six months, running from July 2026 to December 2029, with a total research budget of approximately 5.3 billion won.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to combine its existing formulation research data with AI technology to implement functions such as predicting dissolution profiles, recommending excipients, and suggesting experimental conditions. The company aims to improve prediction accuracy by verifying the AI-recommended candidates through actual experiments and feeding the results back into the learning process.

In the latter part of the project, Daewoong Pharmaceutical intends to apply AI-proposed prescriptions to real development projects and verify their performance through pilot-scale production in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. The company is also pursuing commercialization as a web-based subscription platform in the future.

Sungsoo Park, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, stated, "Through this project, we plan to combine accumulated research experience and data with AI in order to increase the speed and precision of formulation research, ultimately building an AI-based formulation design platform that can be utilized in real-world new drug development."
