President Xi and First Lady Visit the U.S. for the First Time in a Decade
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 24th (local time) for a summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to reports from the New York Times (NYT) and others, President Trump and his wife Melania greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan on the South Lawn of the White House. After exchanging greetings, the two leaders and their spouses entered the White House. This marks the first visit of President Xi and his wife to the White House in over a decade.
The White House arranged a welcoming ceremony for this state visit with the participation of 479 U.S. military personnel. The national flags of the United States and China were displayed side by side, accompanied by a military band performance and an honor guard ceremony. President Trump personally went to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland the previous day to welcome President Xi upon his arrival in the United States. A state dinner in honor of President Xi will be held that evening.
Despite the elaborate protocol, there are not high expectations for a breakthrough on key issues during the summit. The United States and China continue to have disagreements regarding the direction of the trade war truce, Taiwan, competition in artificial intelligence (AI), and China's support for Iran and Russia.

Meanwhile, ahead of the summit, the two countries agreed to extend the current trade truce for another two months. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the previous day that the expiration date of the truce would be postponed from November 10 to January 10 next year. While this move averts an immediate escalation of tensions, negotiations to resolve core issues are expected to continue.
