KOSPI Ends Flat in 'Strong Open, Weak Close' Pattern Ahead of Holiday

On the 23rd, the KOSPI once again showed a "strong open, weak close" pattern, ending with a slight gain. The KOSDAQ index rose by more than 1%.
On this day, the KOSPI closed at 7,080.92, up 0.90% from the previous session. In early trading, the index jumped more than 1% and stayed above the 7,100 level, but dropped to the 7,000 range after foreign investors switched to net selling. Individuals posted net sales of 1.2578 trillion won, with foreigners net selling 684.4 billion won. Institutions were net buyers at 310.8 billion won.
By sector, medical & precision equipment (up 3.36%), electrical & electronics (up 1.95%), chemicals (up 1.28%), manufacturing (up 1.26%), and real estate (up 0.71%) rose. Conversely, construction (down 5.66%), machinery & equipment (down 3.22%), IT services (down 2.40%), transportation equipment & parts (down 2.35%), and electricity & gas (down 1.73%) declined.
The top market capitalization stocks showed mixed results. Samsung Electronics rose 3.25%, SK hynix 1.20%, SK Square 4.03%, Samsung Electro-Mechanics 1.41%, LG Energy Solution 0.29%, and Samsung Life Insurance 1.20%. On the other hand, Hyundai Motor fell 1.94%, Samsung Biologics dropped 1.80%, and KB Financial Group shed 1.42%. Samsung C&T ended flat (0.00%).
The KOSDAQ closed at 844.48, up 1.21% from the previous trading day. Individuals were net buyers at 32.1 billion won, and institutions at 6.1 billion won, while foreigners were net sellers at 48.6 billion won.
Most of the top market cap stocks on the KOSDAQ gained. Alteogen was up 0.20%, EcoPro BM 0.67%, Jusung Engineering 2.95%, Wonik IPS 2.61%, EO Technics 1.69%, Simmtech 0.95%, and HPSP 2.21%. EcoPro ended unchanged (0.00%). Declining stocks included Rainbow Robotics (down 1.14%) and Leeno Industrial (down 0.93%).

Lee Kyungmin, a researcher at Daishin Securities, commented on the session, saying, "The domestic stock market opened higher, driven by the stabilization and decline in international oil prices, but gave up gains as investors remained cautious ahead of the Chuseok holiday," and added, "While foreign and individual investors took profits, momentum in AI semiconductor-related stocks remained solid."
