New Integrated Office Library in Gangseo-gu to Be Named 'Magok Open Library'... Opening in November

On September 23, Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jin Gyohoon) announced that the name of the public library within its new integrated office building, scheduled to open this November, will be 'Magok Open Library.' The name was chosen through a public contest and a popularity survey among local residents.
This library will be located in the new integrated office building moving to Magok in October, marking the first relocation in 49 years. The facility will feature one basement floor and one ground floor, with a total floor area of 2,010 square meters. Prior to the opening, the district solicited naming suggestions from August 1 to 20, receiving a total of 1,621 entries.
The district conducted an initial departmental screening of the submitted names based on creativity, ease of use, and relevance. From August 26 for ten days, an online survey was held, with 531 local residents participating, and ten finalist names were selected. A judging committee, including the Library Policy Council, then evaluated the candidates based on Gangseo-gu's character, the library's identity, originality, and ease of pronunciation. As a result, 'Magok Open Library' received the highest rankings in both the resident survey and committee evaluation, making it the final winner.
The runner-up awards went to 'Magok Chaeknaru Library' and 'Saedam Library,' while 'Magok On Library,' 'Damsuhwa Masil Library,' and 'Meomureum Library' received encouragement awards. The prize money amounts to 300,000 won for the grand prize, 200,000 won for the runner-up, and 100,000 won for the encouragement awards.
The library will be designed as a multi-purpose cultural space for all generations. Boundaries between the general reading room and the infants’ and children's materials room will be eliminated to create an open atmosphere, and a tiered rest area will connect the basement and ground floors. The facility will also include program rooms and club rooms to support resident activities.

District Mayor Jin Gyohoon commented, "'Magok Open Library' will become a representative multi-purpose cultural space in Gangseo, where anyone in the district can comfortably visit, communicate, and relax, going beyond a simple reading room. We will ensure that the new integrated office building opens smoothly and that the library becomes a warm cultural hub that is part of residents’ daily lives."
