On September 22, Wonju City announced that it had been finally selected as a site for the "2027 Project to Strengthen the Competitiveness of Aging Industrial Complexes," a program jointly overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

From 2027 to 2030, the city will invest a total of 312.4 billion won, including projects linked with other ministries over a four-year period. With the Munmak area as a central hub, it will connect the Donghwa zone and new industrial complexes, aiming to build a future industrial ecosystem where future mobility, AI semiconductors, and digital healthcare converge.

The project to strengthen the competitiveness of aging industrial complexes goes beyond merely refurbishing outdated infrastructure. It comprehensively promotes manufacturing innovation, industrial advancement, workforce development, and transitions in energy, environment, and safety sectors.

To this end, Wonju City has established four specialized strategies and eight action plans, and will implement 39 detailed projects. The core of the plan is the "Four Major Transitions" represented by AX, NX, YX, and GX.

AX stands for manufacturing innovation through the integration of AI and digital technologies; NX for the convergence of existing manufacturing industries with future industries; YX for nurturing young and professional talents; and GX for eco-friendly transitions in energy, carbon reduction, safety, and environmental fields.

The city has set specific goals to be achieved by 2030: an AX transition rate of 62.5%, the discovery of 16 convergence items for future industries, planning of 8 joint projects, nurturing 600 core talents, an eco-friendly transition rate of 50%, and a 3% reduction in average energy consumption.

The main bases for the project are Munmak General Industrial Complex, Munmak Agro-Industrial Complex, Banggye General Industrial Complex, and Munmak Foreign Investment Zone. Donghwa General Industrial Complex, Donghwa Agro-Industrial Complex, and Automotive Parts Industrial Complex will participate as affiliated complexes.

The Buron and Pojin new industrial complexes, along with Corporate City, Innovation City, and Heungeop University Town, will also be included as affiliated regions. The plan is to integrate industrial complexes, research institutes, and universities into a unified industrial innovation system. Including the affiliated regions, the project will involve 340 companies and about 9,000 workers.

Wonju City plans to establish a smart manufacturing innovation belt centered on Munmak and Donghwa, and to build a virtuous cycle from research and development through manufacturing, demonstration, talent growth, to commercialization. Through this, the productivity of existing manufacturing will be enhanced and connections among the future mobility, AI semiconductor, and digital healthcare industries will be further strengthened.

Ku Jayul, Mayor of Wonju, stated, "This project will not only upgrade the facilities of aging industrial complexes but also fundamentally enhance their competitiveness by simultaneously advancing manufacturing innovation, transitioning to future industries, developing the workforce, and improving energy, environment, and safety sectors. By integrating future industries with the robust manufacturing base Wonju has accumulated, we will build an industrial ecosystem in which companies grow and quality jobs for young people are created."
