The event was attended by key figures, including Seungmin Lee, Executive Director of the Commercial Products Division at Hyundai Motor Company; Youngah Do, Director of KOICA Regional Operations Division 2; and Sharif Rashadi, Ambassador of Morocco to Korea, along with representatives from KOICA and the Embassy of Morocco to Korea.
The Moroccan government is promoting a low-carbon transition in the energy, industrial, and transportation sectors with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 45.5% compared to the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario by 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In line with this policy direction, KOICA is supporting the transition to eco-friendly public transportation and the reduction of carbon emissions in the transportation sector as part of its Official Development Assistance (ODA) programs.
Accordingly, Hyundai Motor Company will supply 15 Elec City electric buses, rapid chargers, and related equipment, as well as provide local training and technological cooperation to strengthen the operation and maintenance capabilities of electric buses in Morocco.
Elec City is the first domestically produced electric bus to be supplied to Morocco and is expected to be deployed on city bus routes within major tourist areas. It will address public transport demand, help reduce urban air pollution, and contribute to creating a sustainable mobility environment. Hyundai Motor Company plans to leverage this collaboration to explore the possibility of utilizing eco-friendly commercial mobility solutions tailored to diverse regional operating environments and demands.
Sharif Rashadi, Ambassador of Morocco to Korea, stated, "Introducing Hyundai Motor Company's eco-friendly electric buses in Marrakesh, Morocco's leading economic and cultural hub and the host city of COP22 (the 22nd UN Climate Change Conference), holds significant symbolic meaning. Not only will this initiative contribute to Morocco's carbon neutrality goals and improved transportation convenience for citizens, but I also hope it marks a new starting point for Korea-Morocco cooperation on sustainable urban mobility."
