U.S. President Donald Trump has once again dismissed industry warnings about the potential uncontrollability of artificial intelligence (AI) as a “hoax,” reaffirming his commitment to accelerating AI development. He has made it clear that he will not suppress technological advances in the name of safety concerns, aiming to surpass China in the race for AI supremacy.
On September 21 (local time), President Trump wrote on Truth Social, “We will be careful,” adding, “That’s why we have the Justice Department and other law enforcement agencies to maintain control if necessary.” He further emphasized, “But I will encourage AI and Superintelligence (SI).”
President Trump also argued that warnings about AI threatening humanity are as unreliable as climate change projections.
He stated, “The same people who said ‘we’ll all die within twelve years due to global warming’ are now insisting that AI will kill us, robots will attack us, and everything is a disaster.” He went on to label the AI risk narrative as “an even greater hoax” than the Russia-Ukraine allegations that surrounded him or concerns about climate change.
President Trump’s stance on climate change is at odds with the consensus in the scientific community. Organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report that the increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activity is the main driver of long-term global warming.
President Trump has defined the AI race as a core battleground that will determine the winners and losers among nations. He said, “Whoever wins the AI race will come out on top,” adding, “Right now, we are ahead of China and every other country, and I will keep it that way.”
He also stressed, “I will not suppress growth in a field that could become even bigger than the industrial revolution or the internet itself.” On the issue of AI safety, this suggests he prefers to mobilize the Justice Department and other law enforcement agencies to address problems as they arise rather than imposing preemptive restrictions on development.
Recently, President Trump has repeatedly criticized calls to slow down AI development, especially after Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, argued that progress should be reined in. He has dismissed individuals emphasizing AI risks as “negative forces” or “conspiracy theorists,” opposing regulatory measures on AI development by stressing the need to compete with China.

On September 19, President Trump also revealed plans to establish an “AI task force,” similar to the U.S. Space Force founded in 2019, and to appoint an “AI czar” to oversee it. He argued that the term “AI” does not adequately reflect the nature of the technology and suggested replacement names such as “superior intelligence,” “extreme intelligence,” and “supreme intelligence.” He has also launched an online survey to gather public opinion on the renaming.
