Marine Corps Conducts Third Maritime Live-Fire Drill on Northwestern Islands This Year
Over 200 Rounds Fired from K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers
The Marine Corps conducted a live-fire exercise at sea near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) off the northwest islands on September 21.
According to the Northwest Islands Defense Command (hereinafter referred to as 'Seobangsa'), the 6th Brigade stationed on Baengnyeong Island and the Yeonpyeong Unit stationed on Yeonpyeong Island carried out live-fire maritime drills that afternoon. For this exercise, the units used their assigned weaponry, including K9 self-propelled howitzers and Cheonmu multiple rocket launchers. It is reported that over 200 rounds were fired at maritime virtual targets.
The Marine Corps stated, "This exercise was an annual and defensive drill conducted south of the NLL in our territorial waters, involving unit-assigned weaponry such as the Cheonmu and K9 self-propelled howitzer."

This was the third Northwest Islands maritime live-fire exercise of the year, following those held in February and July. The drill, which had typically been held three to four times a year, had been suspended after the 'September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement' was signed by the two Koreas in 2018. However, it resumed after President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration decided in June 2024 to fully suspend the effect of the September 19 Military Agreement.
