Collaboration Across Power Management, Site Development, and Operations
Kolon Global is accelerating its data center development business by partnering with leading companies in the power and energy sector.
On September 21, Kolon Global announced that it recently signed a business agreement at the Gridwiz Yangjae Office in Seoul with three companies—Gridwiz, Samsung Powertech, and SmartE—for a new data center development project. The four companies will establish a standing consultative body to jointly promote the project.

For this project, it will be responsible for establishing an integrated power and energy management system and attracting investment. Samsung Powertech, a manufacturer of industrial power control systems including switchboards, will be in charge of site development and supplying key power equipment. SmartE, a consulting firm specializing in data centers, will focus on enhancing the quality and completeness of the project. Kolon Global will oversee the entire process of data center engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) by leveraging the capabilities of its partners.
Recently, graphics processing units (GPUs) used for artificial intelligence (AI) computation have seen a significant increase in power consumption and heat generation compared to conventional equipment. This has led to a trend of high-density buildouts, where GPUs and data storage devices are packed into limited spaces. The weight per rack (cabinet containing equipment) now often surpasses 1,000 kg.
To dissipate the heat generated by this equipment and supply massive amounts of power, heavy infrastructure such as large-scale uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), sizable batteries, and specialized cooling pipes are increasingly being added inside these buildings. In the past, standard data center floors were constructed to withstand approximately 1,000 kg per square meter. In contrast, AI data centers now require floors that can support more than 1,500–2,000 kg per square meter. Engineering designs capable of supporting these heavier loads and ensuring large-capacity power supply and cooling systems have become essential.
Kolon Global is responding by combining the construction technologies of its High-Tech Division with the facility operation know-how of its Asset Management (AM) Business Unit. The company will deploy specialized design technologies for supporting heavy loads as well as custom cooling and power engineering capabilities.
