The project aims to restore eelgrass beds, which are key habitats for marine life and recognized as blue carbon sinks, in order to recover marine ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
Lotte Chemical has been supporting the project since last year as part of a three-year initiative focused on marine ecosystem restoration and carbon reduction efforts.
In the first phase of the restoration project, which began in February, approximately 20,000 eelgrass shoots were harvested from the Nohwado area of Wando-gun, Gwangju, Jeonnam, and transplanted to the Geumo Island region. Lotte Chemical plans to continue working with the Korea National Park Service on ongoing monitoring and follow-up management activities to restore marine habitats and ensure the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.
On September 18, about 20 Lotte Chemical employees and Korea National Park Service officials conducted a joint marine environment cleanup in the Geumo Island area. This environmental protection program is being promoted in conjunction with the seagrass restoration project to highlight the importance of marine conservation and to encourage the spread of environmental stewardship practices.
Additionally, Lotte Chemical is working to raise environmental awareness among future generations by providing 'Mobile Environmental Playground' education programs for children living in the island regions of Yeosu.
