Seven Out of Ten Elementary and Secondary School Teachers Say "Generative AI Has Educational Value"
KICE Publishes Survey Results on
"Elementary and Secondary School Teachers' Perceptions of Generative AI"
According to survey results, seven out of ten primary and secondary school teachers rated generative artificial intelligence (AI) as having educational value. In particular, teachers placed higher value on the effect of generative AI in assisting their own work, such as lesson planning and preparing materials, than on its educational impact on students.
On September 18, the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation published the 7th edition of its KICE Education Data Talk, containing the findings of its survey on "Primary and Secondary School Teachers’ Perceptions of Generative AI."
According to the report, in a survey of 1,659 primary and secondary school teachers, 71.6% of respondents evaluated the "educational value of generative AI" positively.
Additionally, 64.2% evaluated the "educational effect on students" positively, while 81.2% answered positively regarding the "educational effect for teachers," including support for lesson planning and material preparation. As a result, the perceived educational effect for teachers was 17 percentage points higher than that for students.
The differences in perception according to years of teaching experience were also notable. Teachers with less than ten years of experience gave the highest score for the educational value of generative AI at 2.96 points, followed by those with ten to less than twenty years of experience at 2.83 points, and those with twenty years or more at 2.65 points.
The same trend was observed in assessments of the educational effect on students: teachers with less than ten years of experience scored 2.78 points, those with ten to less than twenty years scored 2.71 points, and those with twenty or more years scored 2.59 points. The gap by years of experience was even larger regarding the effect of generative AI on lesson planning and material preparation: teachers with less than ten years scored it at 3.12 points, those with ten to less than twenty years at 2.98 points, and those with twenty or more years at 2.79 points.
The research team analyzed, "The shorter the teaching career, the more positive the perception of the educational value and effects of generative AI."
However, there were also significant concerns about generative AI. As many as 86.6% of respondents expressed anxiety regarding the possibility of generative AI providing inaccurate information, excessive reliance on the technology, and ethical issues.
