U.S. President Donald Trump is set to hold talks with Middle Eastern leaders in New York on the 22nd (local time), aiming to end the war with Iran and discuss post-war plans for the Middle East, Axios reported on the 16th.
Citing multiple sources, Axios stated, "President Trump is pushing to meet with heads of state or foreign ministers of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries in New York on the 22nd, during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session," adding, "The meetings will address the future course of the Iran war and the U.S. Middle East strategy following an end to the conflict." The 81st high-level session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to be held at UN Headquarters in New York on the 22nd and will continue until the 28th.
The GCC member states are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. According to Axios, the U.S. State Department reportedly sent invitations to these GCC member states on this day to attend the meeting. Some observers note there is a possibility that the meeting attendees may be expanded to include leaders of other Middle Eastern countries beyond the GCC members.
Recently, President Trump and his aides are said to be crafting a strategy on how to manage Iran and the surrounding region after the end of the war. Axios reported that this strategic plan is likely to be finalized after the U.S. midterm elections in November.
Previously, during last year's UN General Assembly, President Trump met with leaders of eight Middle Eastern and Islamic countries to propose a peace initiative aimed at ending the Gaza war. Following those meetings, the details of the peace proposal were released, and an agreement was pursued to end the Gaza conflict.
