Gupo noodles are a specialty food of Buk-gu, Busan—Han’s constituency—offered as a five-color noodle set that includes white wheat noodles, yellow gardenia noodles, red prickly pear noodles, green tea noodles, and brown buckwheat noodles.
In his enclosed handwritten letter, Han wrote, “I am sending you Gupo noodles, a signature food of Buk-gu, Busan. Gupo noodles are embedded in modern Korean history: they served as a hearty meal for refugees who gathered in Busan during the Korean War, and after the war, they spread across the country along the Gyeongbu railway line.”
He continued, “They are a food that supported people’s lives in the most difficult and challenging times. I will join forces with you to protect the lives of our people and to provide even stronger support.”
He concluded the letter by saying, “I send this gift set with gratitude for Gupo’s longtime tradition. Wishing you a warm and bountiful Chuseok.”
It has also been reported that Han plans to send the gift sets and handwritten letters not only to People Power Party members, but also to National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik; Deputy Speakers Park Deok-heum and Nam In-soon; and Lee Kwang-jae, chairman of the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Budget and Accounts.
An official from Han’s office stated, “We delivered the gifts to the Members’ Offices Building today, and we plan to send them on the 17th to the speaker’s office in the main building and to the offices of each standing committee chairperson.”
With some members of the pro-Han faction voicing calls for Han to rejoin the People Power Party, some observers have interpreted Han’s outreach as an overture toward the party members. One second-term People Power Party lawmaker who is unaffiliated with any faction commented on Han’s Chuseok gift, saying, “This likely signals Han’s intention to join us and fight together.”
