Both Markets Rebound... KOSPI Closes Up 1.4%
Indices Supported by Buying Demand from Institutions and Other Corporations
On September 16, both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ indices, which had opened slightly lower, reversed course and closed higher. Despite selling pressure from foreign investors and individual investors, buying demand from institutional investors and other corporations supported the indices.
On this day, the KOSPI finished regular trading at 6,717.97, up 1.37% from the previous session. The index opened at 6,611.24, dipping slightly at first before quickly rebounding and sustaining its upward momentum. Although it paused temporarily in the afternoon, strong buying in the final session of the day pushed the closing price to the day's high.
Foreign investors and individuals recorded net sales of 1.4074 trillion won and 1.6952 trillion won, respectively. Foreign investors have been net sellers of several trillion won every day since September 10. In contrast, institutional investors net bought 1.4338 trillion won. In addition, other corporations net bought 1.6692 trillion won, also contributing to driving the index higher. "Other corporations" refers to general corporations excluding financial companies. If a listed company purchases its own treasury stock on the market, it is counted under this category. It is estimated that most of the buying in this category was due to treasury stock purchases by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
Although the index climbed, a greater number of industry sectors actually declined. Many sectors fell by more than 1%, including construction (-2.37%), IT services (-2.16%), entertainment & culture (-1.67%), transportation equipment & parts (-1.66%), electricity & gas (-1.60%), machinery & equipment (-1.33%), securities (-1.28%), transportation & storage (-1.19%), and chemicals (-1.08%). Sectors that rose included electrical & electronics (2.81%), manufacturing (1.92%), medical & precision instruments (1.75%), and distribution (1.01%). This highlights how treasury stock purchases by "SamjeonNix" (Samsung Electronics and SK hynix) lifted the overall index.
Among the top 10 companies by market capitalization, Samsung Electro-Mechanics (4.86%), SK hynix (2.54%), Samsung Electronics (1.00%), Samsung C&T (0.72%), LG Energy Solution (0.69%), and SK Square (0.30%) posted significant gains in that order. Hyundai Motor (-2.03%) and KB Financial Group (-0.11%) fell.
The KOSDAQ closed at 815.98, up 0.44% from the previous day. While it opened slightly lower and extended its losses, dropping to as low as 801.12 at 10:22 am, the index subsequently rebounded and, like the KOSPI, closed at its daily high.
Foreign investors recorded net sales of 61.7 billion won in KOSDAQ, while individuals and institutions posted net purchases of 39.9 billion won and 22.6 billion won, respectively.
By sector, non-metals (2.76%), machinery & equipment (2.24%), chemicals (1.70%), electrical & electronics (1.58%), and manufacturing (1.02%) rose. In contrast, communications (-4.09%), publishing & media reproduction (-2.40%), finance (-2.08%), IT services (-1.74%), and pharmaceuticals (-1.24%) declined.
