The prosecution has additionally indicted Kang Seonwoo, an independent assembly member, and Kim Kyung, former Seoul city councilor, on charges of split political donations. Previously, both Assemblyman Kang and former councilor Kim had been indicted and were standing trial on allegations of receiving a 100 million won nomination bribe.

View original imageAccording to the legal community on September 16, the Public Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Hyungwon) indicted Assemblyman Kang and former councilor Kim on September 14 for violating the Political Funds Act. Kim is accused of giving over 130 million won in political donations to Kang on multiple occasions after the 2022 local elections, using the names of dozens of people. It was found that Kang, after returning 100 million won that he received as a bribe for a nomination to former councilor Kim, subsequently received the money back through such 'split donation' methods. The case has been assigned to the Criminal Division 1 Single-Judge Panel at the Seoul Central District Court, which already handles their previous nomination bribe case. The date of the first trial has not yet been set.

Previously, Assemblyman Kang and former councilor Kim were indicted and detained in March on charges of exchanging a shopping bag containing 100 million won in return for a nomination for city councilor candidacy at a hotel in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in January 2022, ahead of the local elections. The sentencing hearing for their nomination bribe case is scheduled for today.
