It has been analyzed that SpaceX is the only candidate capable of building a space artificial intelligence (AI) data center.
On September 16, Lee Jaekwang, a researcher at LS Securities, stated, "The key to building a space AI data center lies in whether massive numbers of satellites can be produced economically and deployed into orbit." He added, "SpaceX is the only company that can accomplish both."
Researcher Lee predicted, "Just as SpaceX used the reusable Falcon 9 launch vehicle to deploy over 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit and establish the Starlink system, the company will build the Starmind system using Starship, dominate the AI industry through vertical integration, and construct a space AI data center."
SpaceX aims to build a space AI data center with a capacity of 175 GW. According to Researcher Lee, "In January, SpaceX filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States to deploy up to one million satellites in orbit, giving the name Starmind, and also unveiled the AI1 satellite." He added, "AI1 is designed for an average power of 175 kW, and if one million units are deployed in orbit, the total capacity would reach 175 GW."

Currently, it is more cost-effective to own an AI data center on the ground than in space. However, the construction period for terrestrial AI data centers has been lengthening due to political opposition and bottlenecks in key components such as gas turbines. Researcher Lee explained, "If ground-based construction is delayed by more than three years, the economics of space-based data centers will surpass those based on Earth." He continued, "If the payload capacity for the fully reusable Starship V4 doubles compared to Starship V3, and satellite manufacturing costs fall by 30 percent, the economics would be even greater—even without any ground construction delays."
