Kakao to End "Kanana" AI App Service Next Month... Focusing on KakaoTalk AI Services
"Capabilities Gained from Beta Service to Be Integrated into New Services"
Kakao will terminate its artificial intelligence (AI) app "Kanana" service on October 15, 2026. The company announced plans to transfer the AI capabilities accumulated from operating Kanana to KakaoTalk-based AI services, such as "Kanana in KakaoTalk" and "ChatGPT for Kakao."
On September 15, Kakao notified Kanana app users, stating, "The Kanana app and PC service, which have been provided in beta form, will end on October 15."
Regarding the background for discontinuing the service, Kakao explained, "Amid rapid changes in the domestic and global AI markets, we have decided to conclude the experiment and transfer both the technical capabilities gained from operating the Kanana app, as well as user feedback, into Kakao's various AI services."
Kanana was launched in May 2025 as a closed beta test (CBT) with the concept of an 'AI mate' to assist users in both individual and group chatrooms. It provided answers by understanding the context of conversations between individual users or among participants in chatrooms.
This service termination, however, applies only to the standalone Kanana app and PC version. Other AI services by Kakao, including Kanana in KakaoTalk, ChatGPT for Kakao, Kakao Tools, and PlayMCP, will remain available as usual on KakaoTalk.

Existing Kanana users can back up their data until October 14, the day prior to service termination. Conversation data can be downloaded and backed up from Kanana on PC, and images generated in AI Studio can be individually downloaded from the storage folder. After the service ends, users will no longer be able to access chat histories or generated images. All user data will be destroyed in accordance with relevant laws and the privacy policy upon termination of the service.
