A man in his 60s was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being tried on charges of stabbing his wife multiple times with a weapon and attempting to murder his mother-in-law when she tried to intervene.
According to Yonhap News Agency on the 15th, the 11th Criminal Division of the Ulsan District Court (chief judge Park Donggyu) sentenced Mr. A, a man in his 60s who was indicted for attempted murder, to 14 years in prison.
On a night in March, Mr. A went to his mother-in-law's house where his wife, Ms. B, was staying, and knocked on the door. When no one opened the door, he broke the glass door and entered the home.
He then wounded Ms. B on various parts of her body using a weapon he had brought. When the weapon broke, he attacked Ms. B again with another weapon found in the house. During this incident, he also stabbed his mother-in-law, Ms. C, when she tried to stop him.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A had already been sentenced to prison for drunk driving, and had grown suspicious that his common-law wife, Ms. B, was having an affair. After being released on parole, Mr. A proposed legal marriage registration to Ms. B, but she refused. When Ms. B told him she would be staying at her mother's house, he went there and committed the crime. The incident occurred just two days after his parole release.

The court stated, "The victims suffered severe physical, psychological, and financial harm. The victims and their families have repeatedly petitioned for severe punishment. The defendant is particularly blameworthy as he committed the crime while on parole, instead of reflecting on his actions." However, the court also took into consideration that Mr. A admitted to the crime and did not have a prior record of violent offenses.
