View original imageOn September 15, GS Construction announced that it will digitalize quality inspections by introducing “Twyn,” a digital inspection solution from German AR specialist company Visometry, to plant sites. The system allows inspectors to compare and inspect 3D design models with actual fabricated equipment before installation at the site.
For plant construction, equipment undergoes quality inspections to verify whether the fabricated product matches the design drawings before being installed on site. Traditionally, inspectors would compare the drawings and the fabricated items manually, a process that was time-consuming for complex equipment. Additionally, discrepancies during inspection could arise depending on the inspector’s proficiency.
Moreover, if quality anomalies are not detected during the manufacturing stage, additional rework may be required during the installation process at the site.
To improve work efficiency in quality inspections, GS Construction adopted the “Twyn” digital inspection solution. The incorporation of “geometry-based automatic alignment and tracking” technology—capable of automatically matching 3D designs to equipment positions and orientations—enables usage even indoors where securing satellite signals is difficult.
Inspectors first check for any major quality anomalies, such as missing components, incorrect installation, or incorrect position or orientation. For areas requiring further verification, a 3D laser scanner is used to precisely measure the actual shape, which is then compared to design standards for a more detailed inspection.
GS Construction has applied AR-based quality inspections at four ongoing domestic and overseas plant sites. Based on the accumulated technology and operational experience from this process, the company plans to expand the application to areas such as steel modular construction and other manufacturing fields requiring repetitive quality checks. Going forward, GS Construction aims to systematically collect and manage inspection results and quality history data, continuously advancing the digitalization of quality inspection processes.
