With the construction of an “AI Autonomous Laboratory” that enables AI to independently design experiments and robots to automatically perform chemical reactions and analyze results 24 hours a day, the institute aims to accelerate AI-driven innovation.
On September 14, LG AI Research held the “LG AI Talk Concert 2026” at the Convergence Hall of LG Science Park in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, introducing its expert AI systems currently applied in the manufacturing, finance, and science domains along with key achievements. In his keynote speech, Co-Director of Research Woo-Hyung Lim stated, “While building good AI models is important, the true mission of LG AI Research is to solve the difficult problems that have long remained unsolved in industrial sites.” He stressed, “To address challenges in the field, we need AI capable of understanding and reasoning about countless variables and even rare 1% exceptions, and we must be able to demonstrate tangible, real-world outcomes.”
Director Lim said, “The domain expertise of LG AI Research is rooted in deep professional knowledge, on-site data, and problem-solving know-how.” He added, “All the accumulated documents, unpublished on-site data, contextual understanding, and the proven insights of experts built through countless trials and errors—these form the critical foundation of our ‘expert AI’.”
LG AI Research disclosed several cases of its “expert AI” systems, which have been developed while solving a diverse array of industrial challenges over the past six years. In the manufacturing sector, the institute introduced AI foundation models such as “Exaone Tabular,” which understands and predicts process conditions and quality information, and “Exaone Omni Inspect,” which inspects processes and products without the need for retraining, even when their visual appearances change.
Director Lim further explained, “Exaone Tabular identifies relationships and patterns hidden within data and predicts missing values, enabling us to anticipate the likelihood of defects in processes in advance. Furthermore, it discovers the optimal conditions for improved quality and efficiency.” Because Exaone Tabular has been trained on more than 100 million table datasets, it can deliver high-quality predictions in new domains with little available data, and if a specific dataset exists, customized supplementary training allows for even higher performance.
In the science sector, LG AI Research introduced “Exaone Discovery,” which designs new materials and predicts synthesis outcomes. The aim is to go beyond mere design and prediction by AI and establish an autonomous experimental system that carries out actual experiments.
Through collaboration with LG Household & Healthcare, LG AI Research reviewed 420,000 candidate compounds in a single day to discover the anti-hair loss ingredient “Ramsidil.” It is also developing next-generation oral peptide drugs in partnership with D&D Pharmatech. In addition, “Exaone 4.5” has been incorporated into the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s AI system for new drug review, with expectations that it will help reduce the time required for future drug approval reviews.
Global Expansion of Finance-Specialized AI Solution "Exaone BI"
LG AI Research also announced achievements in its globally expanding finance solutions. Lee Hwa-young, Head of AI Business Development, explained, “After officially launching the finance-specialized AI solution ‘Exaone BI’—where multiple AI agents collaborate to handle everything from data analysis and reasoning to prediction and explanation—earlier this year, our partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) is targeting the global market, while our collaboration with Koscom is focused on domestic growth.”
Since its establishment in December 2020, LG AI Research has tackled and resolved over 100 complex industrial challenges. This is a concrete step in realizing the innovation commitment of Kwang-mo Koo, Chairman of LG Group, who has often emphasized, “The rules of technology and competition are changing, and customer expectations are rising higher. We must go beyond past formulas for success and leap forward through new innovation.”
Director Lim expressed, “Based on our robot foundation model, we are advancing toward a future where not just individual robots, but entire factories operate autonomously as a single intelligence. We aim to create a future where everyone benefits from the value represented by the name ‘Exaone’—an expert AI for all.”
