Reform New Party Shifts to Emergency Leadership Committee, Appoints Lee Kiin as Chairperson
Term Until Next July
Party Reform and Organizational Restructuring
Following its defeat in the recent local elections, the Reform New Party has decided to reorganize and strengthen its independent direction by transitioning to an Emergency Leadership Committee system, nominating Party Secretary-General Lee Kiin as the chairperson of the committee.
On September 14, Cheon Haram, Acting Party Leader of the Reform New Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly and announced, "We have selected Secretary-General Lee Kiin as the chairperson of the Emergency Leadership Committee." Initially, the party had considered recruiting high-profile figures such as external personnel and former Assemblyman Cho Eungcheon, but these efforts reportedly did not succeed.
Acting Leader Cheon explained, "Revitalizing the party requires close internal communication and practical problem-solving," and added, "Secretary-General Lee, who is well-versed in the party’s internal affairs, is suited for the role of chairperson."
Previously, the amendment to the party constitution establishing the Emergency Leadership Committee passed with a 56.26% voter turnout and a 91% approval rate in a general vote involving approximately 27,000 core party members. Starting from today, Chairperson Lee will lead party reforms and organizational restructuring until July 27 of next year, the remaining term of former leader Lee Junseok.

Meanwhile, since resigning as party leader, Lee Junseok has not publicly engaged in party matters such as the formation of the Emergency Leadership Committee, focusing instead on individual legislative activities and making statements on current issues through YouTube and other channels. Whether the "Lee Kiin Emergency Leadership Committee" can fill the leadership vacuum left by Lee Junseok and rebuild the party after its local election defeat remains a key question.
