HS Hyosung Energy Solutions Korea to Invest KRW 1.2 Trillion in Ulsan for New Silicon Anode Material Plant
First Production of 5,000 Tons per Year Plant Set for 2028
Step-by-Step Expansion Planned Through 2030
HS Hyosung Energy Solutions Korea announced on the morning of September 14 that it would sign an investment agreement (MOU) for the construction of a new silicon anode material production plant at Ulsan City Hall, with Ki-Soo Lee, CEO of HS Hyosung Energy Solutions Korea, and Sangwook Kim, Mayor of Ulsan, among the attendees.
HS Hyosung Energy Solutions Korea, a joint venture established between HS Hyosung Group and Belgium's Umicore to enter the silicon anode material business, plans to invest a total of KRW 1.2 trillion in the Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex and build a mass production system for silicon anode materials by 2030.
This investment will proceed in three phases. According to the agreement, an initial investment of KRW 300 billion will be made to construct a silicon anode material production plant (MPK-1) with an annual capacity of 5,000 tons by the first quarter of 2028.
Silicon anode material is attracting attention as a core material for next-generation batteries, as it enables higher energy density compared to conventional graphite anode materials and improves fast-charging performance. This, in turn, can help increase the driving range of electric vehicles and shorten charging times.
HS Hyosung Energy Solutions Korea plans to prioritize hiring Ulsan residents during the construction and operation of the new plant, contributing to local job creation and revitalizing the regional economy.
The City of Ulsan plans to work closely with the company to ensure smooth implementation of the investment and its stable establishment in the region, providing active administrative support such as assistance with various permits and approvals.
