With the escalating shortage of power infrastructure caused by the expansion of AI data centers, the fuel cell market is emerging as an alternative solution. Esprism, a pioneer hydrogen fuel cell company in Korea, is also responding to this market shift by expanding its business from fuel cell manufacturing to integrated building energy solutions.
On the 14th, independent research firm ValueFinder analyzed that as the bottleneck in power supply worsens due to the expansion of AI data centers, fuel cells—which feature short installation periods and on-site power generation—are being highlighted as a realistic power alternative. The report noted that if investments in AI data centers accelerate and new businesses diversify, it is important to pay attention to Esprism's potential for mid- to long-term performance improvement.
Founded in 2014 and listed on KOSDAQ in 2018, Esprism is a specialized hydrogen fuel cell company. The company has developed Korea’s first 1-kilowatt (kW)-class residential fuel cell stack and holds relevant technologies. In March this year, the company changed its name from S-FOILCELL to Esprism.
Esprism possesses a diverse portfolio of fuel cell products—ranging from building, power generation, and transportation applications—and has the technological capability to provide integrated design from fuel cell stacks to power conversion systems. As of the first half of this year, the revenue breakdown was: building fuel cells 67.5%, power generation fuel cells 16.3%, power plant operations 12.7%, and services 3.5%.
The rise of fuel cells as an alternative for meeting the growing power demand of AI data centers is primarily due to the extensive time required to expand conventional power grids. Although data center construction is accelerating, building power infrastructure still involves a long lead time. As such, on-site power generation—which allows for the direct production of electricity at required locations with shorter setup times—is drawing attention.
In fact, U.S. data center construction spending reached an all-time high of approximately $75 billion in July. Global fuel cell company Bloom Energy also recorded $1.07 billion in sales in the second quarter this year, up 166% year-on-year, and raised its performance guidance.
Esprism is extending its business beyond fuel cell manufacturing into energy integrated solutions. This involves the combination of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), energy storage systems (ESS), building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), and heat pumps, enabling comprehensive management of power generation and consumption in buildings.
The approach involves jointly utilizing electricity generated within the building and the base load supplied by fuel cells, while repurposing waste heat generated in the fuel cell power generation process for heating, cooling, and hot water. The company also plans to build a distributed energy solution by connecting ESS and heat pumps to control the timing of power usage.
Esprism plans to collaborate with specialized companies to launch pilot products within one year of commencing the business and proceed to standardize its offerings. Over the mid- to long-term, it also aims to expand into solutions based on clean hydrogen.

Jihoo, a researcher at ValueFinder, said, "As the power supply bottleneck at AI data centers worsens, fuel cells with short installation periods and on-site generation capabilities are gaining attention as practical power alternatives. Since Esprism is expanding its business with building energy integrated solutions that combine PEMFC, ESS, BIPV, and heat pumps, it is worth watching to see if the company will benefit from the growth in AI data center investments."
