KOSPI Closes Below 6,900 Due to High Oil Prices and Interest Rates
KOSDAQ Also Falls 1.95%
Due to the burden of high oil prices and high interest rates, the KOSPI fell by 1.76% compared to the previous session, dropping into the 6,900 range. The KOSDAQ also declined to a similar degree.
According to the Korea Exchange on September 11, the KOSPI closed at 6,909.91, down 124.01 points (1.76%) from the previous session. Individual investors purchased shares worth 1.8658 trillion won, but foreigners sold 2.2915 trillion won and institutions sold 1.2236 trillion won, pulling down the index.
As tensions in the Middle East escalate and international oil prices climb back above $100, the domestic stock market is also being affected. View original imageBy industry, declines were led by electronics and electrical equipment (-2.66%), manufacturing (-2.21%), medical and precision equipment (-2.18%), distribution (-1.79%), metals (-1.73%), chemicals (-1.65%), machinery and equipment (-1.29%), securities (-1.15%), pharmaceuticals (-1.00%), and IT services (-0.71%).
Most of the top large-cap stocks also saw declines. Samsung Electronics fell 3.53%, SK hynix dropped 2.21%, SK Square decreased 4.05%, LG Energy Solution lost 1.37%, Hyundai Motor fell 1.67%, Samsung Biologics decreased 0.56%, and Samsung Life Insurance dropped 0.65%. KB Financial Group was the only one to rise, gaining 2.60%, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics ended unchanged (0.00%).
The KOSDAQ also struggled, closing at 16.28 points (1.95%) lower than the previous session. Similar to the KOSPI, individuals were net buyers of 511.6 billion won, but foreigners were net sellers of 312 billion won, and institutions were net sellers of 215.9 billion won.
Among top KOSDAQ market cap stocks, all fell except for Robotis, which remained unchanged (0.00%). Alteogen declined by 3.25%, Ecopro by 2.88%, Ecopro BM by 7.08%, Jusung Engineering by 5.43%, Rainbow Robotics by 2.90%, EO Technics by 2.09%, Wonik IPS by 7.15%, Leeno Industrial by 4.18%, and Simmtech by 2.02%.
Lee Kyungmin, a researcher at Daishin Securities, stated, "The domestic stock market weakened due to the sharp rises in international oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields," adding, "With the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to be released tonight serving as a key variable for the future direction of financial markets, market caution has grown amid surging international oil and producer prices."

He further explained, "Amid heightened external uncertainties, most sectors showed weakness, and the sharp increase in U.S. Treasury yields has especially increased the burden on growth stocks."
