Strengthening Undergraduate Education Linkages and Fostering Future Mathematical Talent
The faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Keimyung University (President: Shin Il-Hee) has been successively selected for national research and development (R&D) projects by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).
The Department of Mathematics at Keimyung University has been conducting research in diverse fields such as analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, approximation theory, and combinatorics. More recently, the department has been focusing on integrating mathematics with cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and scientific machine learning in both education and research.
In this R&D program, three new projects led by professors Daewon Jeong, Eunkyeong Go, and Byungseon Jeong have been selected. Including Seunghoon Lee, who is already conducting a Young Researcher Program project, all tenured faculty members of the Department of Mathematics are now carrying out major NRF projects.

View original imageThe projects are as follows: ▲ Basic research on a dyadic scattering neural network-based surrogate model for irregular singular integral operators (Core Research Program Basic Research A, Daewon Jeong) ▲ Study on the multiplicity of positive solutions for nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (Core Research Program Basic Research A, Eunkyeong Go) ▲ Research on flexible approximation methods and applications based on relaxed reproducing conditions of basis functions (Core Research Program Basic Research B, Byungseon Jeong).
Professor Seunghoon Lee is carrying out a Young Researcher Program Type A project on the extension from embedded complexes to triangulations.
The research areas encompass not only pure mathematics such as partial differential equations and combinatorics but also applied mathematics, including numerical analysis, approximation theory, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
Professor Daewon Jeong explores mathematical and computational methods to efficiently approximate complex singular integral operators using dyadic scattering neural networks, while Professor Eunkyeong Go investigates the existence and diversity of positive solutions in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations.
Professor Byungseon Jeong is developing new numerical methods that overcome the limitations of traditional approximation techniques by relaxing the reproducing conditions for basis functions. Meanwhile, Professor Seunghoon Lee is researching complex structures and triangulation theory in the field of combinatorics and discrete mathematics.
This structure, where traditional theoretical research and advanced interdisciplinary studies are conducted concurrently, is a key characteristic.
Professor Byungseon Jeong stated, "I will continue to develop more flexible numerical computation methods by relaxing the constraints of traditional approximation techniques and conduct research applicable to a variety of data-driven problems."
Professor Eunkyeong Go commented, "Since research on partial differential equations is closely linked with physics and engineering problems, I will pursue studies that connect both fundamental and applied research."
This achievement is also expected to impact the educational and research environment.
Through their professors’ research, students will be able to encounter the latest trends in mathematics and explore a wide range of career paths, from pure mathematics to AI convergence fields.
