The National Hangeul Museum and Lotte Wellfood are introducing a limited-edition chocolate inscribed with Korean consonants and vowels to mark the 100th anniversary of the designation of Hangeul Day.
The National Hangeul Museum and Lotte Wellfood launched the "Hangeul Limited Edition ABC Chocolate" on the 11th to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day. Instead of the usual alphabet shapes, Korean consonants and vowels were applied, and the packaging features the handwriting style from "Saminpilji," the first pure Hangeul world geography textbook in Korea. The chocolate, which was originally shaped like the English letters A, B, and C, has been newly produced in the form of Korean consonants and vowels.
The font from "Saminpilji," a collection owned by the National Hangeul Museum, was used for the product. The packaging also features a photo and description of "Saminpilji," and a QR code has been added so that consumers can access more detailed information about the artifact.
"Saminpilji" is Korea’s first exclusively Hangeul world geography textbook, written by American missionary Homer Hulbert. The title means "knowledge that all scholars and commoners must know." The National Hangeul Museum owns a first edition that is believed to have been produced around 1890–1891.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day, the 580th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum, and the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunmaengjeongeum. To commemorate this, the museum is organizing exhibitions, educational programs, academic conferences, and experiential events. The current collaboration was also planned to promote Hangeul culture in everyday life.
