POSCO Drives Steel Innovation with AI... Nurtures POSCO Steel AI Convergence College
Solving On-site Steel Mill Issues with AI
AI Curriculum Expanded to 45%
The two-year associate degree program, POSCO Technical College, operated by POSCO, will be reborn as the POSCO Steel AI Convergence College.
On September 10, POSCO announced that it had applied to the Ministry of Education to change the name of the school in July, and received final approval on August 20.
POSCO Technical College was established in 2014 with the aim of nurturing talent equipped with both practical skills and specialized knowledge. Over the past 13 years, it has produced 435 graduates.
Through this reorganization, POSCO plans to further enhance future technological competency in steel manufacturing sites and accelerate the digital transformation of production. The core of this reform lies in shifting the curriculum to focus on AI. Courses with low practical relevance, which were previously operated mainly in fields such as metals, machinery, electrical, and management relevant to steel production, have been restructured, while a large number of the latest AI-related courses—including AI systems and AI programming—have been introduced. Out of a total of 31 courses, 14 are now AI-related, accounting for 45% of the curriculum.
Practical training will also be further strengthened. When enrolled students identify areas for improvement in actual production processes, they will be provided with one-on-one coaching by in-house experts to help them develop AI-powered solutions.
Industry-academic collaboration and hands-on training infrastructure will also be expanded. POSCO has secured top-tier faculty and content by partnering with POSTECH Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, local universities, and external professional organizations. In addition to digital lecture halls and IT laboratories, high-performance workstations and training robots will be introduced, creating a comprehensive environment for AI, robotics, and automation training.
Park Sung-eun, President of POSCO Steel AI Convergence College, emphasized, "By nurturing talent who best understand both steel and AI, we will establish ourselves as a key educational platform that elevates POSCO’s future competitiveness to a new level."
