National Institute for Korean Medicine Development to Conduct "Korean Medicine Utilization Survey" of 6,000 Adults Nationwide
Establishing National Statistics for Korean Medicine Policy Development
The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development (President: Koh Ho-yeon) announced that it will conduct the "2026 Korean Medicine Utilization Survey" from September to November 2026.
The Korean Medicine Utilization Survey is a nationally approved statistical survey that investigates and analyzes the experience, demand, and awareness of Korean medicine healthcare services. It provides foundational data necessary for the establishment of Korean medicine policies and related research.
Until now, the government has consistently tracked changes in public Korean medicine utilization and policy demands through this survey.
Overall satisfaction among users of Korean medicine services has steadily increased, recorded at 74.5% in 2020, 76.6% in 2022, and 79.5% in 2024.
The 2024 survey found that 67.3% of adults aged 19 and older had utilized Korean medicine healthcare, with the purposes being "treatment of illnesses" (93.9%), "health promotion and beauty" (9.5%), and "others" (7.8%), in that order (multiple responses).
This year marks the 8th round of the survey, targeting a nationwide sample of 6,000 adults aged 19 and over.
The survey items include: ▲ experience of using Korean medicine healthcare services ▲ actual utilization of Korean medicine within the past year ▲ utilization of Korean medicine healthcare by children ▲ awareness of Korean medicine healthcare ▲ intention of future usage and recommendations to others ▲ awareness of and intention to use Korean medicine systems, and more.
The survey will be carried out through household visits and interviews conducted by Korea Gallup Research Institute, a professional research organization.
Depending on participation conditions, a retention survey will also be conducted, in which the questionnaire is distributed and then collected during a follow-up visit.
The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development plans to ensure the reliability of the statistics by managing survey quality through the operation of an expert advisory committee and conducting investigator training.
Yun Young-heum, Head of Evidence Analysis at the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development, stated, "The Korean Medicine Utilization Survey is an important national statistic for understanding the current state and changes in public awareness of Korean medicine, and is used to establish relevant policies and research. We kindly request the active participation of the public to produce accurate and reliable statistics."

The survey results are planned to be released in the first half of next year through the official website for the Korean Medicine Utilization and Herbal Medicine Consumption Survey.
