On September 9, Samsung Electronics held a media briefing to introduce the useful health features of the Galaxy Watch9. The Galaxy Watch9 is distinguished by helping users easily recognize physical changes that are hard to detect in daily life and supporting improvements in everyday health habits.
Choi Jongmin, Executive Vice President of the Digital Health Team at Samsung Electronics MX Division, emphasized, "Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and the second leading cause in Korea; by the time you get diagnosed and receive treatment at the hospital, it is often too late. Preventive healthcare that enables early intervention is more important than anything else."
He added, "By combining the sensor technology of the Galaxy Watch with the analytical capabilities of Samsung Health, we can help users prevent heart health risk factors in their daily lives. Going forward, we will continue to introduce prevention-focused smart healthcare services."
The standout feature on the Galaxy Watch9 is its 'biological indicators' function. It measures heart rate during sleep, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen saturation, sets a personal baseline, and notifies the user of any significant changes based on that standard. Samsung Health analyzes the precise biometric signals collected by Galaxy Watch 24 hours a day, allowing users to intuitively understand their heart health and proactively manage it.
You can also check your heart health. The 'heart health score' featured on the latest Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9 comprehensively analyzes how daily health data such as sleep, activity level, vascular stress, and body composition affect long-term heart health, providing users with an intuitive score.
For example, if a user records higher-than-usual vascular stress, the device sends a message recommending a low-sodium diet rich in whole grains and fresh foods, which helps eliminate sodium and relax vessel walls.
If the user experiences significant bodily changes deviating from their usual baseline, immediate notifications are provided, allowing for early detection and response to potential health abnormalities.
According to Samsung Electronics, last year, a user in Jordan detected arteriosclerosis early and underwent treatment after receiving an irregular heart rhythm alert. In Brazil, a user who received repeated 'result not available' notifications from the electrocardiogram (ECG) function visited the hospital and was able to avoid a myocardial infarction crisis. There was also a domestic case where medical staff used the Galaxy Watch in an in-flight emergency to check pulse and provide prompt first aid.
Furthermore, the 'daily aerobic workload' function tells users whether they should follow their planned workout or take a rest, based on the load placed on the heart during everyday activity and exercise. The 'body fitness index' function helps improve workout performance by comprehensively analyzing individual fitness markers such as body composition and cardiorespiratory endurance.
Executive Vice President Choi also highlighted that Samsung Health allows not only personal health management but the option to share health information with family members or friends. With the Chuseok holiday approaching, children can monitor key health indicators like their parents’ blood pressure and heart rate together to take care of their wellbeing.
If the user adds a family profile and connects Samsung accounts, guardians or other family members can check each other's health status and respond to signs of abnormal changes. This feature requires user consent, and health data can be selectively shared according to user preference, including steps, workout, sleep, body weight, body composition, food, heart rate, stress, blood pressure, blood sugar, medication, and biological indicators. The accumulated health data may also be provided as a reference when consulting with medical professionals, contributing to more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
Regarding the future direction of the watch’s health functions, Executive Vice President Choi explained, "The continuous glucose monitor (CGM) market is rapidly growing, and there is increasing interest in non-invasive CGMs. Recognizing the importance of glucose and metabolic diseases, we are continuing research not only at Samsung Electronics’ internal labs but also by seeking out global technologies abroad." He added that with the recent surge of interest in running, they are also focusing efforts on strengthening sports-related features such as pace management.
