"What a Shame After Spending 14 Billion Won"... Nicolas Cage's Malibu Mansion Damaged by Massive Sinkhole
Coastal Erosion Caused by Hurricane Marie
Gas Leak Occurs During Driveway Collapse
A portion of a Malibu beach mansion owned by Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage sustained damage due to a massive sinkhole.
According to Fox News on September 8 (local time), the access road in front of Cage’s Malibu beach mansion collapsed and a massive sinkhole formed. Local fire authorities estimate that this incident occurred because coastal erosion caused the ground beneath the driveway to be washed away.
Footage from the scene captured a sinkhole about 30 feet (approximately 9 meters) wide and long that had opened up at the driveway in front of the mansion. Below the sinkhole, the collapsed access road and support structures for the house were exposed, and parts of the glass fence and chunks of concrete that had been installed along the driveway had also fallen in.
This incident is believed to be connected to the recent high waves that hit the southern California coast. Due to the impact of Hurricane Maria, the southern California coast experienced waves up to 10 feet (about 3 meters) high, leading to continued coastal erosion.
During the collapse of the driveway, a nearby gas pipeline was also damaged, causing a gas leak. As a result, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene, closed the road, and the California Gas Company cut off the gas supply and began restoration work. The City of Malibu is currently inspecting the safety of the surrounding area. So far, no evacuation orders have been issued for residents and no injuries have been reported.
Previously, Cage reportedly purchased this home in 2024 for 10.5 million dollars (approximately 14 billion won). The modern house spans about 4,000 square feet (approximately 112 pyeong) and features an outdoor lounge area and large floor-to-ceiling windows. Cage does not appear to have been at home at the time of the accident. The house was reportedly empty and under construction at the time.
