One in Five Passengers on Gimpo–Jeju Route Flew Jeju Air This Year... Tops Market Share
Expanded to 26 Round Trips Per Day
Achieves an Average Load Factor of 93.7%
Surpasses 1 Million Monthly Passengers for Eight Consecutive Months
Jeju Air has secured the top spot in passenger transport on the Gimpo–Jeju route, which is South Korea’s most lucrative domestic air route this year, achieving a market share of over 20%.
On September 9, Jeju Air announced that it had transported 1,979,360 passengers on the Gimpo–Jeju route from January to August this year, capturing a 20.7% share of all passengers during that period.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Aviation Information Portal, the total number of passengers on the Gimpo–Jeju route during the same period was 9,581,651, with a total of 52,078 flights. Jeju Air operated 11,017 of those flights, accounting for a 21.2% share of all flights. This means Jeju Air had the highest market share among the nine domestic airlines operating on the route. In other words, one out of every five passengers on the Gimpo–Jeju route flew with Jeju Air.
Jeju Air increased its seat supply by utilizing the route rights for Gimpo–Jeju that it acquired as a corrective measure from an airline merger in January. Starting from March 29, when the summer schedule began, the airline increased the number of daily round-trip flights from 22 to a maximum of 26, adding approximately 1,500 seats per day on average. As a result of this expanded supply, Jeju Air ranked first in monthly passenger numbers on the Gimpo–Jeju route for the first time in April and maintained the top position for five consecutive months through August.
Despite increasing supply, Jeju Air maintained a high load factor. From January to August, the airline achieved a 93.7% load factor on the Gimpo–Jeju route, up about 2 percentage points year-on-year. In addition, Jeju Air was the only domestic low-cost carrier (LCC) to consistently exceed 1 million monthly passengers for eight consecutive months from January. In August alone, Jeju Air set a yearly high by transporting more than 1.2 million passengers, with a cumulative total of 8.98 million passengers from January to August.
