The investigation period for the Special Investigation Committee for the Truth-Finding and Prevention of Recurrence of the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster will be extended by one year. As a result of the extension of the committee's activities, the period during which victims’ rights can be remedied will also be extended by one year, respectively.
On September 8, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that a partial amendment to the "Special Act on the Guarantee of Victims' Rights, Truth-Finding, and the Prevention of Recurrence of the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster," containing these provisions, was passed by the Cabinet and will be promulgated and enforced on September 15.
This amendment is a measure to sufficiently ensure a thorough investigation by extending the activity period of the Special Investigation Committee for the Truth-Finding and Prevention of Recurrence of the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster by one year, as the current period is set to expire on September 16. Accordingly, the committee’s activity period will be extended until September 16, 2027.
The period to apply for victim recognition will also be extended by one year. Those seeking to be recognized as victims due to the Itaewon disaster may submit an application for acknowledgment and compensation in writing to the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster Victim Relief Review Committee until March 16, 2028.
According to Article 2 (Definitions) and Article 50 (10·29 Itaewon Disaster Victim Relief Review Committee) of the Itaewon Disaster Truth-Finding Act, eligible individuals include those who were involved in emergency rescue or recovery activities at the time of the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster (excluding public officials who participated as part of their official duties), those who operated a business or were engaged in work activities near the affected area at the time, and others who suffered physical, psychological, or economic damage due to the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster and require recovery.
The application deadline for recovery leave, which helps victims who are recognized as workers recover, will also be extended by one year. Workers wishing to take recovery leave may apply to their employer until September 16, 2028.

Minister of the Interior and Safety Ho-joong Yoon said, "With this revision of the special act, we expect efforts toward thoroughly uncovering the truth behind the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster to continue, and to provide real support for victims and bereaved families to restore their daily lives." He added, "We will work more proactively to ensure that there are no cases where people suffering economic loss and psychological trauma from the disaster miss out on support due to lack of information."
