In addition, the foundation plans to operate career exploration programs such as aptitude tests and professional mentoring to help the scholarship recipients design and plan their post-graduation careers in detail.
Laos is a youthful nation with a median age of around 25.3 years and is considered to have significant potential for driving national growth in the future. However, the overall higher education gross enrollment rate is only about 15%, comparatively low among ASEAN countries, which means the opportunities for young people to access higher education remain relatively limited.
Guided by the talent development philosophy of honorary chairman Chung Mong-Koo of Hyundai Motor Group, who believes the next generation must be given a “ladder of hope” through education, the foundation selected Laos as its first overseas nation for direct local educational support in order to broaden opportunities for promising youth.
This project is particularly meaningful in that it expands the foundation’s approach to talent development into overseas local communities. Whereas the foundation previously supported outstanding ASEAN students to study and grow in Korea, the scope has now been extended to enable young people in Laos to continue their studies in their own country, develop their capabilities, and become future leaders in their communities.
