Duseo Community in Ansan Ranks Second Nationwide in Autonomous Fishery Management, Secures 140 Million Won in Project Funds
The "Duseo Autonomous Fishery Management Community" in Daebudo, Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, was selected as "Duseo," the second-best community nationwide in the "2026 Autonomous Fishery Management Community Evaluation" conducted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, securing 140 million won in development funding for next year. With this achievement, Gyeonggi Province has produced outstanding communities for three consecutive years, following the selection of Heulgot in 2024 and Jonghyeon in 2025.
Autonomous fishery management is a system in which fishermen voluntarily form communities, establish rules suitable for local conditions, and take responsibility for resource management, fishing ground protection, order maintenance, and business improvement. As of now, 44 such communities are active in Gyeonggi Province.
The Duseo community was highly evaluated for a number of initiatives, including independently installing shellfish escape prevention nets (tidal fences) in idle fishing grounds where no shellfish production base existed, thus creating new village fishing grounds; establishing their own closed seasons and size limits; restricting production volumes; releasing juvenile clams; and conducting ongoing environmental cleanup efforts.
The community has boosted incomes through joint seafood sales, running simple sales booths for visitors and experience participants, and developing independent packaging materials. In 2024, profits were distributed to members as dividends, and in 2025, a new community office was established. The membership requirements for new fishing village association members were also eliminated, lowering the barrier to entry for returnees to fishing and for both young and middle-aged newcomers.
