"Odyssey" Surpasses 10 Million Viewers in 33 Days Since Release... Second This Year After "The Man Who Lives with the King"
Second 10-Million Audience Foreign Film in Four Years, This Year’s Second Blockbuster Hit
Director Christopher Nolan's film "Odyssey" has surpassed 10 million cumulative viewers.
According to Universal Pictures, the film's distributor, "Odyssey" exceeded a cumulative audience of 10 million around 4 p.m. on September 6. This milestone was reached just 33 days after its release on August 5.
"Odyssey" is the second film released this year to attract more than 10 million viewers, following director Jang Hang-jun's "The Man Who Lives with the King."
Among foreign films released in Korea, it is the 10th film ever to surpass the 10 million viewer mark in the past four years, and the 35th film overall, including both Korean and foreign productions.
Previously, foreign films that exceeded 10 million viewers include "Avatar" (2009), "Interstellar" (2014), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015), "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018), "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), "Aladdin" (2019), "Frozen 2" (2019), and "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022).
"Odyssey" is also the second film by Nolan to exceed 10 million viewers in Korea, after "Interstellar."
Since its release, "Odyssey" has consistently maintained the top spot at the box office through September 6, reaching 1 million viewers after 4 days, 5 million after 13 days, and 8 million after 24 days, marking the fastest box office climb among this year’s releases.
"Odyssey" is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem "The Odyssey" and depicts the journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca (played by Matt Damon), who returns home after leading the Greeks to victory in the decade-long Trojan War, only to spend another ten years on his journey back.
The film features a star-studded Hollywood cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya.
It also attracted attention as the first film in cinema history to shoot its entire 172-minute runtime on IMAX film cameras.
The trend of viewing the film in premium theaters—centered around IMAX—also contributed to its box office success.
As of September 5, the number of viewers who watched "Odyssey" in IMAX theaters reached about 1,704,000, surpassing the record set by "Avatar: The Way of Water," which drew 929,000 viewers, making it the highest ever for IMAX screenings in Korea.
