Blue House: "Potential Contribution to Hormuz Within Limits That Do Not Undermine Korean Peninsula Readiness"
The Blue House stated on the 4th that regarding the issue of practical contributions to the Strait of Hormuz, "We are considering various scenarios related to readiness on the Korean Peninsula and believe that we have room to maneuver as long as there is no significant harm."
A senior official at the Blue House met with reporters at Chunchugwan on this day, saying, "We have discussed practical contributions on several occasions, and this includes military contributions." The official explained, "There are different ways to make military contributions—combat, non-combat, search and rescue, and so forth. We are reviewing all options in a comprehensive manner."
The official added, "Deployment of troops is a term found in the Constitution. Whether for combat or non-combat operations, even if only one person is sent, it is considered dispatching troops." He continued, "People often associate deployment with combat, but that is not necessarily always the case."
When asked whether there are any principles or standards for deployment, the official replied, "It feels as though the question is somewhat premature," and added, "We have already stated that we will consider the readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula and review everything according to domestic legal procedures. Nothing has been set, but the review is ongoing." However, he added, "We are currently holding discussions with the United States, France, and the United Kingdom."
In response to a question about whether pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump had influenced the deployment decision, the official said, "There is no direct connection between Trump's statements and our review regarding troop deployment."
He stated, "We have been holding discussions with a firm commitment to making real contributions for the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz," and added, "We have previously clarified that it is not true to say we have provided no assistance, and I want to reiterate that point."
