Executive Director Kang to Lead Overseas Investments
On September 4, domestic private equity firm VIG Partners announced that it had newly recruited Vice President Shin-Hyuk Yoo and Executive Director Sungwook Kang. Vice President Yoo, formerly of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), will join the investment team, while Executive Director Kang, who previously served as President and CEO of GE Healthcare Asia Pacific, will leverage his experience to oversee overseas investments.
Shin-Hyuk Yoo, Former BCG, Joins the Investment Team... Over 18 Years in M&A and Corporate Strategy
Vice President Yoo has worked at Deutsche Bank, Valtic, Roland Berger, and BCG, carrying out M&A advisory and corporate strategy projects for over 18 years. At BCG, he advised on major domestic and international M&A deals, handling industry analysis, strategy development, and value enhancement work across the board.
Three VIG Executives — Kijung Kang, Gyumyung Kim, and Jonghyun Bae — who have each worked at VIG for over ten years, will also see their roles expanded, joining CEO Changhoon Shin and Vice President Yoo to form the core investment team. VIG explained that, based on their understanding of the existing portfolio and operational continuity, these executives will take a leading role in sourcing and managing new investments.
Duksoo Sohn, who graduated from KAIST, founded a startup, and has consulting experience at McKinsey as well as prior work experience at VIG, has also joined the company. VIG stated that it has strengthened its analytical and value enhancement capabilities by supplementing its mid-level and junior staff as well.
Sungwook Kang, Former GE, to Lead and Strengthen Overseas Investments... Supporting Overseas Expansion for Portfolio Companies
Executive Director Kang was President and CEO of GE Healthcare Asia Pacific, overseeing business across 13 markets including Southeast Asia, Korea, and Australia/New Zealand. He also served as President of GE Korea and as President of Cisco Systems Asia Pacific, with a management career spanning roughly 40 years. He has spearheaded numerous M&A deals, post-merger integrations (PMI), multi-country organizational management, and the formation of global partnerships.
Based in Singapore, Executive Director Kang will draw on his business experience and network across Asia to support VIG’s identification and evaluation of international investment opportunities. He will also assist portfolio companies with overseas market entry and cross-border M&A activities.
On the operational front, he will collaborate with the management of portfolio companies to support operational efficiency improvements and execution of growth strategies. VIG stated that, through these efforts, it aims to further systematize post-investment portfolio management and value creation.
Changhoon Shin, CEO of VIG Partners, stated, “With the addition of Vice President Shin-Hyuk Yoo and Executive Director Sungwook Kang, our leadership has been strengthened in both the investment and operational areas. By expanding the roles of long-serving internal staff and enhancing our team with new external talent, we aim to solidify a management system that drives results based on team capabilities, rather than those of a single individual.”
