"As Soon as Yong Hyein Was Nominated... After a 195% Surge, This Stock Suddenly Plunged"
No Direct Connection Between Nominee Yong and the Company
Stock Soared 195% on AI Data Center Hopes
Sharp Drop Attributed to Profit-Taking and Investment Warning
The KOSPI-listed company Hyein has recently become the subject of public attention as it was labeled a “Yong Hyein theme stock” following the nomination of Yong Hyein as the Minister of Gender Equality and Family. This development stems from the fact that both the company and nominee share the name “Hyein,” leading some investors to draw humorous connections between the stock’s performance and political events. However, there is no direct connection between nominee Yong and the company Hyein in terms of business or ownership. The recent sharp decline in the stock price is largely attributed to profit-taking after a rapid rise and supply-demand pressures from being designated an investment warning stock, rather than from political issues.

According to the Korea Exchange on the 3rd, Hyein shares plunged 24.9% over three days: falling 2.29% on August 31, dropping another 13.08% on September 1, and declining by 11.61% on September 2.
Coincidentally, the downturn began on the very first trading day after Yong was nominated as a ministerial candidate. As a result, online discussions exploded with comments such as “Is this really a Yong Hyein theme stock?”, “If confirmed, the share price will hit the upper limit,” and “The curse of Yong Hyein,” humorously linking the stock moves to political developments.
However, Hyein was founded in 1960 as Hyein Trading and has used its current name for nearly 30 years before candidate Yong—born in 1990—was even born. No business, ownership, or any other kind of connection has been found between the two.
In Reality, Profit-Taking and Investment Warnings Are to Blame
An analysis of Hyein’s recent stock movement makes the underlying reasons for the sharp decline even more apparent. At the end of July, the share price hovered just above 4,000 won, but in August, it surged dramatically, achieving a nearly 195% gain through August 28—making it the highest among KOSPI-listed companies during that period.
The primary driver behind this rally was expectations of increased demand for emergency generators amid the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Hyein is the official domestic dealer for Caterpillar, a global player in construction and mining equipment, and it runs an engine and generator business. Hyein’s history of supplying Caterpillar emergency generators to the data centers of Samsung Electronics, SK, Naver, and Kakao elevated the company as a beneficiary of the expanding AI infrastructure.
Improved financial results also supported investor sentiment. Hyein’s operating profit for the first half of this year reached 8.4 billion won, a 58.7% increase from the same period last year. Notably, operating profit in the power energy segment increased by 6.2 billion won, or 62.3%.
However, the speed of the stock price increase far outpaced the company’s actual fundamentals, such as improvements in performance or new orders, leading to concerns. Hyein was designated as a short-term overheated stock on August 11, followed by an investment warning on August 18, and the company even issued a notice for a re-designation as an investment warning stock on September 1.
When a stock is designated as an investment warning, buying requires 100% deposit margin, and margin purchases are restricted. As profit-takers sold off after the sharp rise, these market restrictions also contributed to increased stock price volatility.

However, as much of that optimism is already reflected in the share price, further gains will require tangible results, such as confirmed new orders and further improvements in performance.

In conclusion, most analyses suggest that it is difficult to directly attribute the recent stock price collapse to the nomination of candidate Yong. The coincidence of the names merely became fodder for a “theme stock meme” online, while the actual drivers behind the stock’s volatility were profit-taking after a near tripling in price within less than a month and supply-demand pressures triggered by market warning measures.
