Samsung C&T to Build Four SMRs in Sweden...Joins 1.2GW Nuclear Power Project
Joint EPC Partnership with US Nuclear Company
"Full-Scale Entry into the European SMR Market"
Samsung C&T will participate in a project to construct four Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Sweden. The company has been selected as a joint design, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), a US nuclear power company. The project aims for a total generation capacity of 1.2GW, with commercial operation targeted for the mid-2030s.

This project involves building four 300MW-class BWRX-300 SMRs on a site owned by Studsvik. The project location is a region already licensed to operate nuclear facilities. Studsvik will lead the project, taking charge of permits, environmental impact assessments, and consultations with the Swedish government.
Samsung C&T and GVH will participate as joint EPC partners. From the early stages of the project, they will collaborate across all aspects including design, procurement of equipment, and construction. The two companies were chosen as strategic partners after a competition among three groups that began in May last year. This marks the first project secured since Samsung C&T and GVH began collaborating to expand their global SMR business.
The BWRX-300 applied to this project is an SMR developed by GVH. It uses a boiling water reactor (BWR) type, which generates electricity by turning turbines with steam produced from boiling water in the reactor. The same model is currently under construction as a commercial SMR in Darlington, Ontario, Canada.
Sweden is pushing to expand its nuclear power capacity. By 2035, the country plans to secure 2.5GW of new nuclear power, combining SMRs and large-scale nuclear plants, and increase this to 10GW by 2045.
