Donggumi Station and Gumi-Gunwi Expressway Becoming Reality
Exports Up 66% and Economic Indicators Improving
Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has been bolstering its foundation for future growth by achieving numerous accomplishments, including attracting large-scale corporate investments and expanding regional transportation networks, since the launch of the ninth popularly elected administration.
During the eighth administration, Gumi City attracted six national projects, such as specialized industrial complexes for semiconductor materials and components and a defense industry innovation cluster, securing over 16 trillion won in investments from more than 1,140 companies.
Within less than a month of the launch of the ninth administration, Gumi City also secured investments totaling approximately 1 trillion won from four companies: Jahwa Electronics, AGC Fine Techno Korea, Ottogi, and Worldex.
In addition, investment plans worth 19 trillion won by Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS have further accelerated the industrial transformation of the Gumi National Industrial Complex.
The city has activated an Advanced Industry Innovation Task Force, focusing its administrative resources on nurturing future-oriented industries such as AI robots, semiconductor materials and components, secondary batteries, and future mobility.
Significant changes are also expected in transportation infrastructure.
The preliminary feasibility study for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk metropolitan railway has been approved, making the establishment of Donggumi Station a tangible prospect.
Last year, the Gumi-Gunwi expressway also passed its preliminary feasibility study.
The city plans to further establish a metropolitan transportation network linking the new airport and the national industrial complex by promoting connection railways among Gimcheon, Gumi, and the new airport, as well as securing KTX stops at Gumi Station.
Economic indicators are improving as well.
In the first half of this year, Gumi’s exports recorded $21.38 billion, a 66.1% increase compared to the previous year.
The employment rate rose by 2.7 percentage points to 64.0%.
The vacancy rate in the Gumi Station commercial district also decreased from 26.5% in the fourth quarter of last year to 24.4% in the first quarter of this year.
Gumi City is operating initiatives such as the Regional Economy Revitalization Committee, the Local Commercial District Support Group, and the Market Environment Improvement Task Force. The city is also strengthening policies to support small business owners and stimulate consumption, so that the benefits of industrial growth can extend to local commercial districts.
Jangho Kim, Mayor of Gumi, stated, “Securing national projects, large-scale investments, and transportation network expansion are driving Gumi’s new leap forward,” adding, “We will focus our administrative efforts to ensure the benefits of industrial growth reach citizens’ daily lives and local commercial districts.”
