Former Daejeon Mayor Yum Hongcheol Appointed as Chair of 2027 Chungcheong Universiade Organizing Committee
Former Daejeon Metropolitan City Mayor Yum Hongcheol has been appointed as Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 2027 Summer World University Games in the Chungcheong Region (Universiade).
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that Minister Choi Hwiyeong presented the appointment certificate for Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 2027 Summer World University Games in the Chungcheong Region to former Mayor Yum during a ceremony held at the Government Complex Sejong on the morning of September 3, 2026.

View original imageYum was nominated through recommendations by the four governors and mayors of the Chungcheong region, followed by approval from the Organizing Committee General Assembly, and finally received the Ministry’s approval on August 31, 2026, officially appointing him as Chair. Yum previously served as the government-appointed Daejeon Metropolitan City Mayor in 1993 and was elected mayor in both 2002 and 2010, demonstrating verified leadership and extensive experience in local administration over his three terms.
The 2027 Summer World University Games in the Chungcheong Region will be held from August 1 to 12, 2027, across the four Chungcheong region cities and provinces—Daejeon, Sejong, North Chungcheong, and South Chungcheong. Over 15,000 student-athletes from more than 150 countries around the world are expected to compete in a total of 18 sports disciplines.
Minister Choi Hwiyeong said, “Chair Yum Hongcheol is an expert with experience in both central and local administration, and I expect he will address key issues for the event and help drive collaboration in the Chungcheong region. The government will also spare no effort to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful hosting of the Games.”
